Exploration of different roof types; Asphalt, Metal, Clay Tile, and Concrete Tile.

When choosing the best Roof System for your home, it’s important to consider a few different factors. Do you live in a High Wind or Hail prone area? Are you looking for something that can cut expenses? Will your new roof provide optimum protection or give your home the incredible look that you’ve always dreamed of? Here are few of the Pros and Cons of different types of roofing materials to help you choose the roof that best fits your needs.

  • Asphalt roof systems are the most common and widely known systems. They provide protection and beauty at a reasonable cost.
  • Pros: Relatively inexpensive and providing protection from most typical weather, Asphalt Roofs come in a variety of designs and colors. They are generally the easiest and fastest roof systems to replace and repair.
  • Cons: While providing basic protection from the elements, Asphalt roofs can be more susceptible to high winds and damaging hail. They also have a shorter life expectancy than some of the other roof types.

  • Much like Asphalt, Metal roofs come in a variety of colors and designs. From Exposed Fastener to Standing Seam, these systems provide the benefits of Impact Resistance and Energy Efficiency.
  • Pros: Metal Roof systems typically hold up much more effectively against adverse weather conditions. In many cases, Insurance Carriers will provide discounts for a metal roof, as they are less likely to suffer damages under average to slightly above average weather conditions. They also provide energy savings by absorbing only about one third of the heat from the sun.
  • Cons: Metal roofs tend run around double to two and a half times the cost of a standard Asphalt roof. Exposed Fastener Roof systems tend to require maintenance to prevent backing out of the fasteners, which can often be overlooked until after the damage has occurred.

  • Clay Tile roofs are very popular due to their beautiful appearance. More aesthetic than protective, Tile Roofs can add curb appeal and provide adequate protection for the elements.
  • Pros: Clay tiles can enhance the appearance of a home unlike any other type of material.
  • Cons: Clay tiles are more likely to be damaged under adverse conditions. In many cases, repairs will be needed on a more frequent basis. Clay Tile roofs are typically more expensive and need a substantial amount of bracing to be installed on a home.

  • Concrete Tile roofs are more durable and typically less costly that Clay Tiles. They provide excellent protection and fire resistance while adding tremendously to the aesthetics of a home.
  • Pros: Durability and Fire Resistance. Concrete Tile roofs are also very pleasing to the eye and add Curb Appeal like no other.
  • Cons: Heavy weight. Most Concrete Tile roofs require additional bracing to sustain the weight of the roof system. Slightly less costly that Clay, but more expensive that Asphalt or Metal.
